It is not a religion but a Way of Life. Zen can be used as a Way in any religion. Zen is a training in mindful awareness during the process of day to day life. Words can't really describe Zen, but living with Zen is spiritually empowering. The paradoxical truth.

Same with east, keep going east on a journey and you will always be to in the west of where you are going. Therefore to arrive is an illusion. If you don’t keep going you will stand-still forever, and that does not really happen.

It is said that every in life is impermanent. So impermanence is a permanence!

When or where in the universe did all this paradox begin?

It always was.

When will all end?

It never will. It is so, right now!

So where is now?

Gone!

Now... What it there to explain?

The truth is, it would be a lie!
Zen thoughts from the mind looking at itself. . Crazy thoughts. Don’t believe in them!

The mind is an illusory recording device.

What else could it be?

It records all it can perceive in the universe and holds it in memory in order to recognise what is and what is not. Its function is to collect knowledge to survive, to try and find an improved quality of life. However…

The past is no more, the present is immediately gone, and the future is not yet. When thinking about these tenses, the mind is using memories of what it already knows.. And that it past! Nothing is stable and permanent as everything is in a state of flux. Yet the mind believes in stillness. But is it ever still? Thoughts coming and going, even in the shape of dreams whilst we sleep. In dreamless sleep we do not know anything, The mind may be stopped, but we are not aware and we cannot remember it. It is said that an enlightened person can be aware of the unknowable. Aware of no-mind?

The belief in the ability to make the unknown, known is powerful. It is said that an enlightened person can be aware the unknowable. How can he know it? It is said that if we try to know it, then it is not going to happen. This, I would imagine is a koan.

We use the word knowledge, and the mind collects it as if it is of the ultimate importance, yet all knowledge changes. Knowledge is subject to the laws of evolution along with everything else in the universe. But the recording-device brings about the illusion that knowing can be permanent. Even that the here-and-now is permanent, but it is momentary and cannot be tied down. The here-and-now indicates that which is constantly in a state flux. But yet it is true that now is gone and the only knowledge of it is a recording in the mind –just a memory. Now is indivisible. To the mind is divided into now, and now, and now… like a clock ticking away. The seconds that we believe are divided are not really divided at all! But look carefully… where is a second divided? Query this and notice what the mind does. If you can do this, you are witnessing the mind. But who is witnessing the mind? Where has the time gone? Where has the moment gone.. immediately gone.Derek http://www.blogger.com/profile/06479806223324647958noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2445972270247790446.post-15397187889642246772018-09-09T09:03:00.001+01:002018-09-09T09:03:22.169+01:00Zen Life Contemplation

Zen Life: Contemplating Mind and Life

Right now, I am aware that my mind has been questioning this life. I say ‘has been’ because I can only know of things of the past, not of the present.

The here-now... is non-existent for my mind.

I must be existent because I am living existence.

But my thinking is always about what was and not what is.

One of life’s mysteries. Well... all of life’s mysteries when contemplating life itself!

Life is a mystery is that it is constant and permanent, but not in thought, for the ego-mind believes it knows life. But really…..

I do not know how life comes to be.

But does life really come to be? All I can know is an expression of life through my experiencing.

I would say that life always was, is and will be, as it is in everyone and everything both the sentient and the non-sentient – no beginning, no end.

Life is not created by or of the mind because it cannot be. Before my mind there was life. After my mind there will be life. Sometimes in Zen, life is referred as Mind, with a capital ‘M’, or ultimate enlightenment.

Life is... always or immortal. Knowing life is mortal and ends.

My thinking mind developed, and I began to know and remember life. Before that, there was no knowledge, just me without an ability to think, without an ability to know, but I was in life. I can only know what was, and at best my knowledge is faint of being fascinated with I know not what..

Zen can be a word for life and to many it is life. Zen/life indicates life when it reduces everything to the Great Void and allows us a glimpse of it.. Then for that moment, Zen is no more.. No-thing!

The Great Void..

Timelessness, everywhere in space, yet no place that can be separated and indicated 'the space of the void'.

The void is All of space. Beyond the capabilities of thinking.

It is there beyond my grasp, yet something that I am – something that everything and everybody is.

The mind is just an addition…

A created duality.

More on Hara Focusing

In the hara, there is an almost supernatural force. If one was to watch a Japanese Sumo wrestling contest for instance, it would be observed that the contender with the strongest centre in the hara, would displace his opponent from the ring with hardly any effort at all. This is ki (Chinese, chi) that is flowing from the hara and is mysterious and once fully developed, will eliminate the need for great body strength.

My Personal Story of Hara

I remember myself attending a weekend dojo in ki-aikido, a martial art that values the spiritual and utilises full use of the hara, called by ki-aikido practitioners, the 'One Point in the Lower Abdomen'.

A grand ki-aikido master was visiting from Japan, and asked for 3 or 4 of our senseis (teachers) to join him for a demonstration. Once on the mat, our teachers were instructed to attack the master however they wished. They all descended on him at once and with a few flicks of his hands and some small steps, they were all laid out flat on their backs, on the mat. This he demonstrated 2 or 3 times, and it seemed to me that even our senseis were confused as to how this small man could lay them out on the mat so easily.

I must have been looking suspicious of some sort of trick because the master seemed to look right into me and in his broken English said, “Ah! You don’t believe this. Please come here for a moment.”

I was instructed to sit on the floor in seiza position (see illustration above) in front of him, a strong sitting position where one sits on one’s lower legs which are bent at the knees and where one is quite anchored to the ground. The next thing I realised was that I was flat on my back, and I had not felt a thing! He then said he would repeat the move and that I was to pay more attention. He moved towards me and extended his little (pinky) finger and gently touched me on my shoulder. I felt nothing but an extremely subtle but irresistible force and again I found myself laying on my back this time with my legs still folded underneath me. It seemed so very relaxing and yet so powerful. I was now convinced of the power of the hara, the One Point in the lower abdomen, and the power of ki. The master roared with laughter, and I couldn't help but laugh with him. This is something that happens so much in Zen.

I then returned and sat seiza with the rest of the students and senseis, and the master talked about ki and reminded us all to practice keeping One Point... resting the mind in the hara... practising keeping the mind focused in hara during our day-to-day activities in life. It wasn’t to be regarded as something we would learn and forget about, but a way of life from which one will learn experientially of the magic and power of ki.

I have adhered to this process ever since, and whilst I may not be conscious of hara 100% of the time, often when walking or waiting in line for instance, I notice that my mind is focused on my breathing into the hara automatically. With this 'automatic' awareness, I become aware of how centred I'm feeling and choose to focus more consciously. But then knowing that my mind will drift again, I am certain that whether I realise it or not, I am now keeping One Point.

The Happening

The mind functions on reason. Reasonableness is the function of duality – opposites which attract, such as this-not this, good-bad, right-wrong, desirable-undesirable and so on. The human mind does not cause this to happen. It is created from the essence, life, universal energy or could be called God or any number of many names. And the way we know that we are reasoning is that have moved from a moment of non-reasonableness into reason. But exactly how that has happened is not possible to know, for that would be more reasoning which will be the effect of asking the question of how we are reasoning. Explain it we cannot – but we would possible believe that we could explain! ButZen is not philosophy.

In my posts here I often talk of zazen (Zen meditation) as being a way to have the answer to these questions resolved. The paradox is that true zazen is not an action, but a state of being. Zazen is a happening. It comes to us when we are passive, not in activity. Therefore it could be said that zazen is not considered meditation, it is just sitting. There is nothing to 'do".

This can be fully realised by sitters who recognise that zazen itself, which is just sitting, is different with each sitting - imperceptibly perhaps, but over time it changes and we neither cause the changes neither can we stop the changes from happening It is just sitting contacting life as it is in the here-now. Being with whatever is so. Life is alive and forever moving on – forever evolving. Zazen is part of that happening.

Don't have aims in zazen, be zazen itself, totally in the here-now, not seeking, not-doing, not following another's instructions, even these written here! There is no wrong or right way to meditate in this way. It is an occurrence – a happening. And there are no goals in meditation, and if it is seen clearly that meditation is absolute being(ness), that there are no goals, then this in itself leads to enlightenment – or perhaps it is enlightenment... most Zen masters and enlightened beings tell all of us that we are already enlightened!

It has been recorded by others so who have trodden the path to enlightenment that enlightenment can and often does happen when no formal meditation is happening. Indeed, enlightenment also happens during meditation. It is unpredictable and it is unknown and cannot be known, explained or predicted by the mind, but it is realised when it is so.

However, the moment we say, "I think I became enlightened". That is not so. It has nothing to do with thinking, and thinking is a happening within the mind. Enlightenment is a happening within the here-now, a place that the mind cannot enter, but it will remember that something happened perhaps, but it’s not happening here-now in the mind, it's remembered!

This all may sound so contradictory and paradoxical. Life is that way. North meets South, but where? No north, no south for each is the other, but appear as separate. What is north of north? And what happens to the first north? Has it really become south? South of what?

Duality does not really make for peace, it troubles the mind when the mind cannot know. Such is the way of Zen.
What is Absolute Waiting?

When we are in anticipation we are not in a state of waiting. Our mind is on a past events projecting those stored memories into the future as ‘what ifs’ whether they be negative or positive. When we are not in a state of waiting we are up using our moments of life in illusory hopes and what ifs.

We are not having our full awareness of living life. Losing moments of living awareness and consciousness in dreams. The paradox is that we are not really losing anything at all, whether or not we are aware!

This short post invites you to bring what happens regarding waiting to your awareness. That is to support a higher state of awareness, not to prove that this query is right or wrong, or good or bad, for that is a judgement, which is an illusion of the mind.

Since humankind developed language that enabled the process of thinking, we have judged and assessed what is ‘best’, but has humankind ever found what is best? How is any human being going to assess the best without thinking about and referring to what’s worse?

Is it not so that whilst nature nurtures, she does not care? The sun will provide warmth to that which is better AND that which is worse. What’s in between? Just waiting?

Would not absolute waiting be comfortable with the absence of all other things? No judgements, or expectations. Just absolute waiting… And the mind would have no answer even after and in-depth analysis of what waiting is. Even with all the analysis in the world, the mind cannot know what absolute waiting is, as it would just turn out to be another explanation and not absolute waiting itself.

Some contemplation on Absolute Waiting.

Contemplate waiting. When truly waiting, the here-and-now will happen in awareness. Notice if you get a thought come to you that you just cannot wait. Just notice it, for the thought is not waiting or not waiting… The thought is more or less confirming a belief in being unable to wait.

Notice if you are waiting. What action is involved in waiting? How can you show waiting to anyone?

Few or no people absolutely wait as the empty chairs in the picture above represents. Where’s the absolute waiting? Where and what is the activity of waiting? There is knowledge of having waited, but knowledge is just more thinking of thoughts that are stored in memory. it cannot be waiting itself, can it?

Contemplate the question… What is absolute waiting? Throw all answers from the mind away – for they are concepts and beliefs and not absolute waiting. They would be thoughts about waiting that occur AFTER the event of waiting! So keep the question, ‘what is absolute waiting?’ and wait.

Trust: A Consequence of Acceptance

Whilst we are encouraged to trust in life, by many spiritual teachers, there must be confusion as to how to trust. How do we trust?

The truth seems to be that we can’t ‘do’ anything at all. Trust happens as a consequence of acceptance.

When there is no acceptance, it is because of the belief that we can change things by doing something about it, but what is there to do? Acceptance is not a ‘doing’ thing, it is a state of being! And the more we try to ‘be’ a certain way, the more we can fail. We may well imagine that we have ‘achieved’ a new way of being. But it that really so? Are we not just the same underneath it all?

This is because the more we try to change things the more we are in non-acceptance, which will manifest as resistance and intolerance of what is so and that means the more we are in distrust of what is so. And the more we will stay the same. Possibly more intensely the same than before we tried top change!

If things feel good, because of our duality they are going to be bad again, for it is only through such relativity, we ‘know’ anything, and in this particular instance – we know good is the absence of bad and vice-versa.

But where does the bad come from? Where does the good come from? Good may come from those circumstances that we believe we have controlled, bad may come from those circumstances we believe we have not controlled. But if we really have control of our thoughts and feelings of good and bad, why have we not worked out how to stop the bad times and only ever have good times?

Acceptance… going with the flow… will help us transcend such opposites of good and bad that really are not opposites at all, but actually just different sides of the same coin.

The mind is duality moving from one thing to its opposite and back again. It is how its knowledge is being processed and accumulated.

Reality, Life, God or whatever you wish to call it, is omnipresent, omnipotent, infinite, unpredictable as it is constantly moving from the here-now into the here-now. Total acceptance of what is, brings us to the here-now. All that is needed is for our attention to be focused… in this here-and-now.

A Zen master exists everywhere and anywhere life. Within all situations, whether they be trials and tribulations or great moments of joy. The master is not a punishment nor a reward. Not just a person but anything at all. Bird, a flower, a stone – rock or statue. Even something small like a fly, or insignificant like another misty day, or degree of lightness from the brilliant to the depth of darkness. Or like a paradox like, one must have light to see.. and one can see darkness in the midst of light, and light in the midst of darkness, each enhancing and cancelling each other out in a universal play.

All and any these things and anything at all can suddenly and spontaneously be seen as a master and can reveal to us the dream-like state of the world around us that is created in the mind. And in doing so, all these things can indicate strongly that there is only here-now. We just simply need to be open to realising it.

Be mindful of what is around, what objects, people, circumstances, sane of crazy – that could be a master of enlightenmentDerek http://www.blogger.com/profile/06479806223324647958noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2445972270247790446.post-906623164318251022018-08-12T10:16:00.002+01:002018-11-26T10:07:05.759+00:00How to Meditate on Chakras.

Learn how to Meditate on Chakras

This is my way of doing meditation on chakras – there will no doubt, be other methods, but I invite you drop all preconceptions about chakra development, and especially not to blindly believe in what I am saying here, but to go through this exercise and experience for yourself, anything that comes to you from the actual practice of this meditation. Personally, I have found that diligent practice of this method produces results.

Before you start, contemplate the chakras and their colours colours in the image (left) and familiarise yourself with them and the position of each chakra. Get an idea of their location and colour they each resonate with.

It is best to sit upright with arms and legs uncrossed. (A chair will be fine, or if you are already a mediator, you may have a preferred method of meditating). Close your eyes go through the following seven chakras...

The Seven Chakras

1. Base Chakra Focus: (Red)

Take your mind to the Base Chakra the bottom of the torso – usually considered to be in the perineum. Breathe slowly and completely inward and imagine a Red light glowing from this base chakra point and expanding outwardly into the universe like a vortex of energy. Hold the in-breath for a while – it is difficult to think of anything in this gap between the two breaths, as thoughts tend to move only when the breath is flowing. This is ‘no-breath’ (in or out) – therefore it is said that ‘no-thoughts’ can occur which is the state ‘no-mind’ in Zen – there is value in experiencing this.

Next, allow the breath to slowly and gently move out of the body whilst enhancing the image of the chakra as a glowing and expanding light. Hold the breath out for a while before moving on to the next chakra as you begin the next in-breath slowly.

2. Sacral Chakra Focus: (Orange)

Take your mind to the Sacral Chakra located in the lower abdomen also known as the hara. Again, as you breathe slowly in, imagine an Orange light glowing and expanding outwardly into the universe like a vortex of energy from this point. And hold the full in-breath for a while and repeat the same process as with the previous (base) chakra – don’t forget to hold the out-breath also for a while afterwards before moving on to the next chakra as you begin the next in-breath slowly.

3. Solar Plexus Chakra: (Yellow)

Take your mind to the Solar Plexus Chakra or a point in the upper-mid part of abdomen. Again, breathe slowly inward and imagine this as a Yellow light glowing and expanding outwardly into the universe like a vortex of energy. And again hold the in-breath for a while and repeat the same process as with the previous chakra – don’t forget to hold the out-breath for a while afterwards before moving on to the next chakra as you begin the next in-breath slowly.

4. Heart Chakra: (Green)

Take your mind to the Heart Chakra in a point in the region of the heart. Again, breathe slowly inward and imagine this as a Green light glowing and expanding outwardly into the universe like a vortex of energy. Hold the in-breath for a while and repeat the same process as with the previous chakra – don’t forget to hold the out-breath for a while afterwards before moving on to the next chakra as you begin the next in-breath slowly.

5.Throat Chakra: (Blue)

Take your mind to the Throat Chakra or a point in the region of the throat/neck. Breathe slowly inward and imagine this as a Blue light glowing and expanding outwardly into the universe like a vortex of energy. Hold the in-breath for a while and repeat the same process as with the previous chakra – don’t forget to hold the out-breath for a while afterwards before moving on to the next chakra as you begin the next in-breath slowly.

6. Brow (Third Eye) Chakra: (Indigo)

Take your mind to the Brow (third eye) Chakra or on a point in the region between the eyebrows/centre of the forehead. Again, breathe slowly inward and imagine this as a Indigo light glowing and expanding outwardly into the universe like a vortex of energy. And hold the in-breath for a while and repeating the same process as with the previous chakra – don’t forget to hold the out-breath for a while afterwards before moving on to the next chakra as you begin the next in-breath slowly.

7. Crown Chakra: (Violet or white)

Take your mind to the Crown Chakra or a point in the region just at the top the head and perhaps a little above it. Again, breathe slowly inward and imagine this as an violet/white light glowing and expanding outwardly into the universe like a vortex of energy. And hold the in-breath for a while and repeating the same process as with the previous chakra – don’t forget to hold the out-breath for a while afterwards before moving on to the next chakra as you begin the next in-breath slowly. This time when you are ready, just allow the breath to slowly exhale from the body and return to breathing in a natural rhythm, following the breaths for a while down into the body before opening your eyes and returning to normal daily activity.

And that’s the work on the seven chakras.

(My) Zen Notes on Chakra Meditation.

First of all Zen does not foster beliefs. Beliefs are something that may or may not be true. The objective of practising Zen is experiencing. Experiencing in the here-now.

Beliefs are thoughts of the past based on opinion and judgement from past learning and conditioning. Experiencing is existence, here-and-now with or without thinking. Zen is not a way for believers, but for those who are willing to experiment with focus and experiencing mindfulness in order to transcend (ego)mind and experience emptiness or no-mind.

As there are no beliefs in Zen practice, there are no guarantees. It's aim is the development of awareness that grows as mindfulness and focus develops more and more.

The past is thought. The mind is the storage of thoughts of past images, sounds and sensations. The present is experiencing, but when analysed experiences become thoughts after the manifestation of the experiencing analysis is based on past knowledge. So the mind cannot exist as a present moment, for the present moment is not static but moves. The present moment has already gone and is now (possibly) being thought about. It is in this way that we are not experiencing experiencing.

So chakra meditation is the visualisation of each chakra, its colour and its light. We need to drop all stored ‘knowledge’ that has been learned about chakras even what is written here and be here now with our focus. Just experiencing. Notice how thoughts come and go. Allow the to come; allow them to go.

Zen is always exposing paradox and paradox when realised, enhances the experience of the mysterious. Life is a mystery and not a thing that can be analysed as to what it is. It is everywhere and everything.

The best I can do here is to write about how chakras are a mystery. There are some that claim to be able to see the chakras and auras around others, but personally I have not experienced that form of seeing. But what I have experienced are the various sensations that come about in my own body, as a result of what I am naming here as Chakra Meditation... Focusing on the energies as light and colour that are moving through each chakra in the body, as they have been outlined in various explanations and images in many documents throughout history.

The more I have practised chakra meditation over the years, the more vividly the imagery has become, and the more the accompanying experiences have been enhanced. One may ask what this has to do with Zen practice. To which I would answer that Zen can be applied to anything even a belief-system! But then Zen is not a belief system itself but the experiencing of the moment of now.
Beliefs are considered to be illusory but it doesn’t mean that we don’t hold them, they are part of our experience of the dualism of the mind.

Zen embraces all and makes no comment. Duality exists within the context of the Whole and is the 'play' created in about our life – some would refer to this as 'the game of life'.

Words can be forever produced, but it is all just thinking, and not Zen itself.Derek http://www.blogger.com/profile/06479806223324647958noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2445972270247790446.post-70911050390568527662018-08-10T12:33:00.000+01:002018-09-06T15:41:12.268+01:00Zen Is Emptiness

The essence of existence is a mystery of all mysteries. Existence is everywhere
whether or not one knows it. Knowing is about thinking about,
perceiving and everything, everywhere, cannot be known, cannot be
perceived right now. Yet is exists.

Zen is
about ‘stretching’ oneself not to understand this intellectually,

To describe such an experience
words would be inadequate, for thinking of such experiencing, would
only be a memory, for it would have already happened. As does all
experiences!

How this
ability to know in humans came about is impossible to learn about. It
is really not important as the here-now is all we have and the
knowledge of it realised through the mind and imagination, which is
just memory.

Now is
the only time there is. And now is the only time in which we are able
to transcend knowledge. And then it is OK to know to the same degree
that is OK not to know. Knowing and not-knowing are equal, are the same. OK and not OK are equal, are the same. Then duality is transcended.

fine also.

What is Zen?

It is better for me to describe what Zen is for me, for Zen is everything and everybody, and all I can give in any form of communication is what Zen WAS for me, for Zen is ever the present and right now I have moved on to… Well, more Zen!

I would say that if it could be described at all, Zen is an experience of experiencing that is subtly unique to each individual practitioner. And because of this uniqueness, you may read different accounts of what Zen is. This is because words cannot define Zen. Zen is a realisation that comes from practising it. So it could be said that Zen is a happening that one cannot pursue. Neither can one 'succeed' in Zen because it is not an achievement - there is nothing to achieve!

Zen is the here-now, and the here-now contains all there is that exists. How can any words define the here-now when it is immediately gone!? Any definition of Zen will be of what WAS the here-now. And the paradox is that right now, the here-now is no more.

Zen is all there is, the Whole, and how can a ‘content’ that is created from Zen define the Whole? There may be a paradox there too!

Zen can however, be investigated with the words that are being spoken or written, but the words will only point unsuccessfully to the whole. However, consciousness will expand through enquiry.

If one is asked to point to all that there is in the universe, he/she would not succeed at all. Because the pointing would only be to that which is withing the view of the senses, to the individual elements of parts of all there is, like stars and planets and the space between them. One could say that Zen is interested in the space between objects which is emptiness and permeates everything in existence within and without.

The words that can be spoken of Zen are the products of the mind. The mind is not the master, but can point to the master, but only if the mind knows the master, and the mind cannot know the master.

Another paradox – without being guided by some form of knowledge, how can one possibly pursue Zen, the pursuance of which will obscure it even more!?

The Mind.

The mind cannot know Zen as Zen is no-mind. So even these words, can only try and define what Zen is. They can explain the practice of Zen, which is basically formal zazen and extending to mindfulness in all activities, but the experience of Zen and enlightenment will only come if one is actually experiencing the journey to enlightenment totally here-now.

Zen and enlightenment. This is not two. Neither can exist as the named. So Zen is a word for Zen, yet not Zen itself. Enlightenment already is, it just needs to be realised.

An individual will make his own unique path to discover Zen that in reality, he is already at one with. And the thoughts that colour that path, will be his and his alone – nobody else can walk on that path.

Zen In Practice

The basis of Zen is zazen, just being.. just sitting, just standing or walking or working at something or other.. It can be applied to anything that one participates in, in daily life. This is all there is to the practice. It can be quite challenging to be 'just' with anything! The mind will do the challenging.

It can be practised in groups, but it is always alone that a practitioner will realise his/her own Zen.

This is just the beginning of what Zen can be. I am not saying here what Zen is, for I do not know what Zen is. It is no-thing... indescribable. I would say that nobody knows Zen with anything the mind can define. It is a vast emptiness that all these words written here and elsewhere will simply fall into and disappear.

This is just one of many analogies I have of what Zen may or may not be. It is not that I have knowledge of Zen. This is just my Zen practice trying to express itself through words. If it is not making sense, then it is perhaps becoming a little more pure, and unblemished by the mind and its duality.

Why do I practice?

I first heard the word Zen many decades ago, and looked at it one day in a workshop. I felt the need to practice and look for myself, on my own, and I let go of everything I had experienced in the workshop. For me that was just the beginning. It is not that I cannot stop now, it is that I have no desire to stop. Sometimes it can hurt as the mind resists having its reasonableness challenged, but so very often it is the experiencing of pain that is the most revealing part of my practice. Not that Zen is masochistic, as I am more for pleasure any day of the week!

If I had known of the pain that can occur during practice in the beginning, I would still have practised it.. There is something of value that is beyond the mind to describe.
Often physical pain. For me, pain more than often holds a lesson. Sometimes a valuable lesson. Where pleasure and achievement are just “so what!?”, pain can hold some profound insights.

I have had some profound realisations from pain about my existence, often momentary but profound, existential insights. This is often accompanied by a ‘spaced out’ feeling recognising for the moment that I am not my mind-body, or what has been referred to as the ‘pain-body’. But words are not really adequate to explain these moments... but I would say that these moments are healing.

It is claimed by the enlightened that on the moment of enlightenment one transcends pain. From what I understand that does not mean being rid of pain, but finding a state of awareness that holds the pain, is the context of all feeling, and a realisation that it does not last forever.

Zen masters get sick too. One can read many accounts of it. I guess for me it is all about making a distinction between pain and suffering as in our world, the two seem to be blurred together in consciousness by our language.

I feel that we live in the duality of our minds, Indeed how are we to define things if there is no duality?

If there is pain then there is the absence of comfort by which to measure it.

If there is comfort then we would recognise it by the absence of pain.

Just some crazy Zen thoughts on the matter… Coming from memory of what I have learned. That is illusion… or not!

If you wish to, please feel free to share any insight that you have about pain..Derek http://www.blogger.com/profile/06479806223324647958noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2445972270247790446.post-15725715127243257042018-07-16T12:06:00.002+01:002018-07-16T12:07:10.407+01:00Foolish Zen, Foolish Trust

There is nothing to be learned from this post. No information to be stored and carried for future reference by the mind. The invitation is to read it and then carry on with life.

The moment of here-and-now is huge. I am not talking about the moments of the mind that are concerned with passing of time, but the here-now moment. The passing of time is an illusion in spiritual reality. The here-and-now is inclusive of everything because all that is in existence is in existence in this moment, here and now..

How can it exist without the context of here-and now? Surely if there is no here-and-now there is no existence!

Therefore this very moment, this here and this now is the infinite creator. Creator of all that is right here and right now. All is so but the mind only sees a small part of it.

Spiritually, without thought and thinking the here-now can be realised - made real; but when described by the mind that believes in time, it is not the here now. What is being described is what was – it is past.

This brings up this awkward moment that these words can only be believed, because they come from the mind, they come from knowledge, and knowledge can only point to the here-now but is not the here-now, but an illusion of the here-now.

But although an illusion, it exists in the here-and-now… for without the here-now, even illusion would not be able to exist.

What a load of nonsense Zen! And that is correct for Zen cannot be the sensibility that is creation of the mind!

It could be that only a total fool will trust in life completely. The total fool lives totally in the here-and-now with total trust of it. He is judged as a fool, especially by those who take advantage of him, and he keeps coming back in trust to his judges for what they did yesterday is gone. The total fool has let go of yesterday and right now is a new moment and is unpredictable..

The Sun is very powerful but doesn’t judge. It is a total fool that keeps shining down on us whether we be sinner or saint. Is the Sun so foolish? Is it not a very strong symbol of a total fool. We are its gift of life regardless of what we do, it is only the judging mind that punishes.
Connect with life and realise innocence – the innocence that is pure and has no guilt. The word innocence is not the innocence of mind, but pointing to the very context of life, that paradoxically contains all mind stuff, all judgement stuff that is operating in the here-now. If there is no here and no now, how can anything exist at all?

This is the awareness of the Zen master, of the buddha-mind that is breaking through the ‘shadows created in life’ The shadows that are focused on duality and rules and regulations and should-isms.
It is just so. Is that so? It is just so. Acceptance of whatever is manifest without resistance or without trying to change or alter it, or in other words, without desire. Guatam Buddha discovered desire was the source of all suffering.

Meanwhile... I am living in the confines of my conditioning and the paradox is that to try and change it, regardless of how I try and change it, will not eradicate it. I am conditioned! What on earth can be wrong with knowing that I am conditioned? Nothing. There is no right nor wrong except in the confines of the finite mind. Derek http://www.blogger.com/profile/06479806223324647958noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2445972270247790446.post-41921987550158533642018-07-03T10:08:00.000+01:002018-07-03T10:08:10.796+01:00Awareness: Being Dual

It isn’t about striving not to be dual but about being aware of duality as it is working in and through life.

Being more aware of duality existing in consciousness – focusing on it and letting it be.

WE are the world – no better or worse, stronger or weaker than each other until we judge it to be that way.

And dualism is.

It is about just noticing our experience of living life, just noticing and allowing life to be lived through dualism.

Dharma duelling?

There are two to make a duel and it is dual. It could be said that it is used in a Zen life to point out how dual we are when duelling. Being dual with full conscious awareness of such a state of being. Letting it all happen.

All such focused awareness may enhance the awareness of dualism.

Keep looking at dualism when contemplating we are. 'We are' is suggesting that we are one...
One in our dualism for now.

Keeping looking through dualism – seeing through dualism. Keep being aware of being dual and then…
Focus into what is so right now. The past is gone, now is real, and constantly becoming the future. So in effect a paradox... now is not real as it is already the future!? Yes now is all we have and it is non-static.

Problems could be more of an insight than a hindrance, as we have to move. If we feel stuck, the feeling is that we have to move. It is an illusion that we do not move. For we move through our 'stuckness' whether we realise it or not!

Mindfulness makes the difference. Be aware and mindful of what is manifest. We may realise that we are 'not' the doers, but witnesses to what is happening and being done in and by the universe. Something is always happening. Many doings. Doing is a mystery for us, for where does the impulse to do, arise? The source is a mystery.
Being aware of living in the mind. The memories are knowledge, and knowledge from the mind is memory.

Spiritual knowledge is wordless and silent, for it is experiencing. It is existential.

Knowledge of the mind – of knowing, like dirty water… A bath-tub can be cleaned with dirty bath-water, and that would lead somewhere, so whilst I am writing, whilst I am speaking, I am existing and coming from mind - I am mind.

‘I’ can disappear if I were to be existential, experiencing it, yet unable to give it away with words or thoughts.

It is also a 'tool' to enable a subject to recover lost (repressed) memories that are causing unwanted conditions in life. It is not really different to guided meditation when with a hypnotist, or meditation as practised alone. It often said that all hypnosis is self-hypnosis and therefore mediation.... Read more
It is very easy to describe how to do zazen, but it takes commitment to make it work effectively. Read more
Zen:Balance If you live your life in a constant state of achieving, you experience 'aliveness'. You become dynamic living in a state of achieving and not so much achievement. Hypnosis is persuasion, and to realise any form of success we have to persuade our subconscious mind that the success we aspire to is possible and is as good as manifest. Read more..
But in the east, this is something that is not so. In spiritual disciplines such as Zen and many martial arts such as Ki Aikido, mind and body are considered one and these disciplines eventually lead to the realisation that All is one, and that nothing is really separate. Read more..
This is because, in the East, breathing is considered to be the source of life. In your left foot, at the top of your head and so on. But you cannot define exactly what awareness is. It can't be your thoughts because you can become aware of your thoughts and re-direct them.

A Master...

And this is it. Trust. Total trust. And you can choose!

Life can be a master; a stone on the ground can be a master - a butterfly...

Trust that there is something to learn. Sorrow of some loss, can be a master. Fear of that sorrow, even though there is nothing discernible to fear right now, can also be a master.

You get "what ifs"? Any one can be your master. Or if you constantly have them... "Ah but, what if this, what if that?" This could be useful - many masters!

Trust... In order to fly, his life circumstances
demanded that he had to take the leap of faith

The prerequisite though is that you accept totally and just witness it, and it will be the master.. And if you cannot, you are aware that you cannot accept it, and you are still in desire. So just desire (some object or goal) and know that desire totally to its core until it is no more.
That is where I am. That is what I am. Imaginary It has to be I am in my mind, as my mind.... .All is imaginary.

Whether that is true or not is irrelevant. So I seek truth, but need to drop the seeking.

So one thinks he has discovered something that is true. So what? If God is there, or God is not there -- so what? He is there to the degree he is not!

It's always been the way it is, and always will be the way it is... but will be? What am I saying?

Knowing it intellectually is irrelevant! Believing it is irrelevant. Knowing it experientially is profound and then... irrelevant if one begins to believe!

Any time..

Always waiting, and paradoxically, creating that art of waiting will bring us to the here and now. We have arrived where we always were, are now..

Always....

Words, as one would say when visiting a Zen garden, are useless, and so we approach Zen with silence, and live Zen silently, yet here I am writing of it...

How else can I possibly convey my Zen? It is so paradoxical. It is so wonderful....

Leaving one speechless, and if fortune smiles for a moment...

Zen leaves one thoughtless, without thought, without mind.

So how can we speak of it?

Waiting... Wait and see...

Mind loves to have so many labels. If you can understand something, you can feel a little more comfortable. Get it into a nutshell and say, "Ah, this is it. That's why…!" All reasonable and the mind seeks out reasonableness constantly. It is reasonable to "fix things!" and the mind wants everything fixed… right now! The uncertainty of... What if this? What if that? This is beyond the comfort zone. Being is uncertain without our labels, and living life as if it is certain is the mind's trick. But having lived life, one can look back and say " it is certain", simply because it has happened already - we know it well, as it is in our memory, even if it is embellished for our comfort.

But right now, something may go very wrong, it can be as if a thunderbolt has hit us. We feel helpless. We may search and search for a resolution, but there is nothing we can do - or so it feels… This thunderbolt, the shock, is always the worst ever!

Just the very essence of the shock itself may not provide a fix, may not provide an answer. No cure! And we may be desperate! But a "dark night" has come and there is no other option other than to go through it. If here we focus on its essence, we may realize that there is no getting better, but there will come a point when it really doesn't matter. This could be the point of transcending mind and realizing spirit, our essence of being but again no certainty other than the way it is. We can go where we come from and we've been there before - it's our awareness. Awareness is always certain.

The one thing that we can "do" in such an impasse is to drop our doing and just be. Even though rationally there is no choice, there is! We can choose it to be the way it is. To walk through it.. Let the shock of this thunderbolt into awareness more and more. It may be a valuable wake-up call! Or not! For there is no certainty - if we look closer we may get to see that it actually lights the way!

At one time, there was "I am not" it cannot be grasped by the mind though. Then there was a time when there was "I am". Both "I am" and "I am not" depend on each other. Not aware of I and aware of I. We create one and we create the other just as white is created by black. To see this, often involves the realization of a thunderbolt.

Letting go, from where we were has led to where we are. Letting go from where we are now, takes us further. Letting go of now.. That's now.. Understand? It is so whether or not...
